چکیده

Cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disease are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in general population today. Hyperhomocysteinemia, a new independent risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease, has been described in the last ten years. Moderate hyperhomocysteinemia occurs in 5-7% of general population, and is associated in the third and fourth deceny of life with premature coronary disease, stroke, arterial and venous thromboembolism. An increased level of homocysteine could be treated with folic acid. This short review describes the impact of hyperhomocysteinemia on cardiovascular morbidity, and an up-to-date prevention and treatment.

Is hyperhomocysteinemia an important risk factor of cardiovascular disease?

In the last couple of decades many studies have been carried out on the association of moderately high plasma levels of total homocysteine (tHcy) with coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral artery disease and venous thromboembolism. Most studies showed a positive association between tHcy and thrombosis risk. However, despite this, many investigators are still skeptical abo...

Homocysteine: an emergent cardiovascular risk factor?

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and disability in the western world. In the last years, the accumulation of evidence coming from both retrospective and prospective clinical studies has led to an increased interest in the potential role of mild hyperhomocysteinemia as a major, independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The present paper reviews the position of h...

Association of Hyperhomocysteinemia with Coronary Artery Disease in Southern Iran

Background: Differences in the prevalence and impact of hyperhomocytenemia on vascular disease between countries and races have been reported. Most studies have been undertaken in North American and European populations and the importance of plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) level as a risk factor for coronary artery disease in the Middle East particularly in Iran, however, is not known.  Object...

Prospective study of hyperhomocysteinemia as an adverse cardiovascular risk factor in end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND Retrospective and case-control studies show that hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis in patients with end-stage renal disease. We studied prospectively the association between total homocysteine and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS In all, 167 patients (93 men, 74 women; mean age, 56.3+/-14.7 years) were followed for a mean duration of...
